The man of a thousand aliases was born 27 august 1968 in Frankfurt, West Germany.
In 1994, Schmidt started his own label, Rather Interesting with the aim of developing music that doesn't follow the "traditional paths of electronic music".In 1996 he decided to move to Santiago, Chile to explore Latin music. He quickly adopted the intentionally ridiculous Señor Coconut moniker, and soon released El Gran Baile, finding time afterwards to do a little remix work for Towa Tei, formerly of the multi-national Deee-Lite.His next release, in 2000, was the Latin-Kraftwerk fusion of El Baile Alemán. The album featured several Kraftwerk classics reworked with Latin instrumentation and rhythm. El Baile Alemán was intended as a salute to, and a parody of Kraftwerk as evidenced by the intro to "Autobahn" which featured the sound of a car that wouldn't start.The album was credited to Señor Coconut y Su Conjunto, but the album was entirely the work of Schmidt on synthesizers and samplers, with the aid of three vocalists. It received just enough critical acclaim in the U.S. for Schmidt to put together a short headlining tour. In March, 2001, Señor Coconut, complete with a seven-piece backing band, set off for North America, but visa problems with some of the Chilean musicians forced Schmidt to cancel the tour.*

La misma institución que había organizado la presentación de Murakami en conversación con Roland Kelts(Autor de Japanamerica), tenia un conferencia con un importante panel de interlocutores el día domingo por la mañana. Entre el distinguido panel, estaba el traductor de “Norwegian Wood” Jay Ruben. Trate de llegar al evento, pero diríamos que se “atrasaron los trenes...” y cuando llegue al lugar, ya estaba por terminar la reunión. Había un grupo como de cómo unas 40 personas que escuchaba la conferencia en gran silencio. De lo poco que pude escuchar, me pareció que era bastante técnica. En todo caso, la estrellita de la buena suerte me acompañaba ese mañana. En la puerta del lugar había una japonésita muy atractiva(una de las organizadoras), que sin pensarlo resulto ser una excelente informante. Como realmente no vi que Murakami estuviera allí, se me ocurrió preguntarle sobre lo ocurrido la anoche anterior... La chica me mira, se toma su tiempo y con una voz bajita, suave y aterciopelada(para que mencionar el extraordinario perfume que llevaba) decide hablarme al oído:

"Murakami es una persona muy divertida. Lo primero que dijo, fue que había salido en busca de unos vinilos(LP) y que había visitado unos negocios con nombres como, Rasputin y el otro Amoeba... ¡Que lugar mas extraño es Berkeley! -Todos Rieron."

Eso si que suna bastante divertido. Le conteste. -Perdona le digo, ¿pero hablo algo sobre traducciones...?

Nuevamente en esa voz muy particular y suave, siempre tratando de no interrumpir lo que quedaba de la conferencia, me dice.

”Dice que no le importa tanto una traducción fiel, lo importante es que la historia se sostenga... Dice que siente vergüenza al leer sus propios libros en Japonés, prefiere leerlos en Ingles y ver lo que sucede en la próxima pagina. Es mucho mas entretenido y muchas veces incluso se sorprende de lo escrito.”

Luego le pregunte si Murakami había leído alguno de sus escritos.

“Si, decidió leer el mismo en Ingles, pero fue de una de las primeras cosas que escribió, incluso antes que publicar su primer libro, me gusto mucho.”

Con esto ya me parecía haber pasado el mal gusto de perderme la presentación de Murakami la noche anterior. Pero aun quedaban un par de preguntas mas. Le pregunte si Murakami había hablado sobre otros autores...

“Alguien de la audiencia le pregunto sobre su traducción de J. D. Salinger al Japonés...”

¡Que bien! Le conteste. ¿No sabia que había traducido ese libro? Pensaba que solo era algo de Carver y de William Faulkner...

“Carver es uno de sus autores preferidos, pero fue “El Guardián Entre el Centeno” lo que tradujo al japonés. Dice que lo leyó cuando tenia 17 años y según el, tiene que haber estado bastante perturbado para leerlo... -Todos reimos nuevamente."

Luego le digo. Perdona que te pregunte tanto, pero me gusta mucho Murakami. ¿Hablo algo sobre música...?

“Por supuesto. Dijo que le gustaban la banda Radiohead(saco un gran aplauso de la audiencia) También los Red Hot Chile Peppers, REM y Beck. Dijo que Tom Yorke, era uno de sus lectores. Creo que le gusta escuchar música clásica por las mañanas y Jazz por la tardes. Menciono también que había conocido a Brian Wilson... ¡Que tipo mas extraño! -Todos Reimos nuevamente."

Con esto decidí terminar nuestra conversación, en lo que ya parecía un abuso de confianza, pero ella continuo hablando.

“No te preocupes por lo de anoche. Aunque hubieras sabido con anticipación, la entradas estaban agotadas. Los estudiantes de Berkeley y miembros del Instituto Artístico de esa institucion tenían prioridad. Si realmente quieres ver a Murakami, en un rato mas estará firmando autógrafos en “Books, Inc.”( una librería de San Francisco.) Déjame ir en busca de la dirección...”

Luego de un momento, la chica regreso con una elegante cartera de donde saco un lápiz y un papel para anotar la dirección.

“Esta es, tienes que ir ahora mismo, seguramente habrá mucha gente poniéndose en fila desde temprano.”

Nos despedimos intercambiando nombres y le di las gracias por toda esa información. Rapidamente me retire del lugar, en la primera nube que encontré.

*That's a one-minute trailer for a remarkable thirty-minute film available through Folkstreams.net. The movie is called Gandy Dancers, and you can stream it live on your computer. (Another great thing to do instead of getting work done.) Gandy Dancers were railroad workers, almost exclusively African-American, who used music -- including spiritual, nonsensical, and raunchy songs -- to coordinate their track work. Long-retired workers not only explain how the whole thing worked to both practically synchronize movements and inspire very tired guys, but they demonstrate, as old men, what they did as young workers. It's about a half-hour long; watch it if you get the chance.
