Ray Suarez Latest Book: The Holy Vote

Ray firmando un autografo para Alex
NewsHour Senior Correspondent Ray Suarez discussing his latest book The Holy Vote: The Politics of Faith In America on October 20th at 7pm in the Downtown Salt Lake City Library Auditorium.“We can't get American religion out of politics, or politics out of religion. It's too late for that. It would be like trying to get the sugar out of a cup of coffee. But finding a way these two behemoth institutions in American life can coexist, while respecting the convictions of believers and protecting the rights of nonbelievers and those who disagree, is the riddle we must solve.” RS.

THE TORTURE DEBATE, Part II - Letter from Ariel Dorfman

Dear friends who contacted me regarding the U.S. position on torture:
I have been overwhelmed by the number of you who have expressed your horror and sadness that the United States would abandon its founding principles of presumed innocence and habeus corpus, as well as its support for the Geneva Conventions and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and make a policy of torturing human beings in the name of security and freedom. It shows that there are many among us -- I would hope a majority -- who believe we are still a nation of laws, with respect for justice and an abhorrence of the barbaric practices used by authoritarian regimes and criminals.
A number of you responded asking what can be done to stop our country from engaging in these practices.
The Torture Abolition and Survivors Support Coalition International (TASSC) is a coalition of torture survivors (of every ideological sign, by the way) who are dedicated to work toward the abolition of the use of torture and ill treatment currently practiced by more that 150 governments (it's dreadful to realize that we are now being added to the list!). If you feel as strongly as I do about a zero tolerance for torture being used as a "tool" by our government, I urge you to support their crucial work and continue to speak out, writing letters to editors, to your representatives in Congress, and the President.
I have written to Sister Dianna Ortiz, who heads TASSC in Washington, D.C., and she has suggested that you could contact them about any help you might be willing to provide to them.
Their website is: http://tassc.org/
Or you can write to: info@tassc.org

Cordially, and in solidarity,
Ariel Dorfman

THE TORTURE DEBATE

“Can't the United States see that when we allow someone to be tortured by our agents, it is not only the victim and the perpetrator who are corrupted, not only the "intelligence" that is contaminated, but also everyone who looked away and said they did not know, everyone who consented tacitly to that outrage so they could sleep a little safer at night, all the citizens who did not march in the streets by the millions to demand the resignation of whoever suggested, even whispered, that torture is inevitable in our day and age, that we must embrace its darkness? Are we so morally sick, so deaf and dumb and blind, that we do not understand this? Are we so fearful, so in love with our own security and steeped in our own pain, that we are really willing to let people be tortured in the name of America?” By Ariel Dorfman

Los Blops - Rare & Beautiful Compilation

Photo Archive: 1970
Limited Edition: 1000 copies
"This is a 3CD compilation of the rare and beautiful complete works of Chile-based Blops. The first album from 1970 is pure underground folk with some electric moments, the second from 1971 becomes more electric and the third album from 1973 is completely electric and psychedelic with a progressive touch.
Los Blops formed in 1970 when Eduardo Gatti (vocals and guitars), Julio Villalobos (guitars), Pedro Greene (drums), Andres Orrego (keyboards) and Juan Pablo Orrego (bass) performed covers (Beatles, Rolling Stones, Animals, Cream, Kinks) in a local club in Isla Negra, with additional changes in the band with the addition of members Sergio Bezard (drums) and Juan Contreras (flute and keyboards). Their first LP was recorded in 12 hours on a two-track machine and produced by DICAP(Discoteca Del Cantar Popular )".

Book Review by Hugo Chávez

Venezuela President Hugo Chavez recommended a book by Noam Chomsky to the U.N. General Assembly Wednesday. Chavez called on nations to rise up against what he called America's hegemony.
"It's an excellent book to help us understand what's been happening in the world throughout the 20th century," Chavez said, "and what's happening now."

seguirá, yo me habré ido;
rumbo también del olvido
no hay doctrina que no vaya,
y no hay pueblo que no se haya
creído el pueblo elegido.
