Leonard Cohen's 'Book of Longing'

http://www.leonardcohenfiles.com

"Book of Longing is Cohen’s eagerly awaited new collection of poems. It contains erotic, playful, and provocative line drawings and artwork on every page, by the author, which interact in exciting and unexpected ways on the page with poetry that is timeless, meditative, and at times darkly humorous. The book brings together all the elements that have brought Leonard Cohen’s artistry with language worldwide recognition".

What do we need to make the country grow?

"Well, my telephone rang it would not stop,
It's President Kennedy callin' me up.
He said, "My friend, Bob, what do we need to make the country grow?"
I said, "My friend, John, Brigitte Bardot,
Anita Ekberg,
Sophia Loren."
Bob Dylan-I Shall Be Free 1963

Ironia & Humor en una Cancion:
"BUENO,SONO EL TELEFONO SIN PARAR,

George W. Bush
El Peor Presidente en la Historia?

ESTE LUNES SI SE PUEDE!

Foto: Mabel Negrete

The Little Prince, 60 years among the stars

Image: Internet

He may have been around for 60 years, but 'The Little Prince' is unlikely to grow old any day soon, with Antoine Saint-Exupéry's tender tale of the power of love winning new hearts every year. What began as a drawing on a paper napkin in a New York restaurant has to date sold more than 80 million copies around the world — some 11 million in France — making it the most popular French book in the world.

HAY MAS DE 11 MILLONES DE IMIGRANTES INDOCUMENTADOS VIVIENDO EN LOS ESTADOS UNIDOS.

Abril 09 2006

HISTORICA MANIFESTACION ayer en SALT LAKE CITY-Entre 20.000 & 30.000 personas
"Advocates for firmer action against illegal immigration argue that undocumented workers hurt the U.S. economy by taking jobs away from Americans. Immigrants' supporters say those workers take jobs no Americans want -- and without them, the economy wouldn't function".
Several rallies in support of immigrants' rights are held, including in New York, where thousands marched across the Brooklyn Bridge. The issue has come to the fore since the House of Representatives passed a law making it a felony to be in the United States without proper documentation. Congress is debating the most sweeping overhaul of U.S. immigration law in two decades. The Senate's plan includes a guest-worker program and a path to citizenship for the millions of illegal immigrants already in the country. It is considerably more favorable to undocumented workers than legislation passed by the House in December”. npr

In The Heart of The Moon-Ali Farka Toure 1949-2006

Malian Guitar Legend Ali Farka Toure Dies at 67

"One of the most internationally successful West African musicians of the '90s, Ali Farka Toure was described as "the African John Lee Hooker" so many times that it probably began to grate on both Toure's and Hooker's nerves. There is a lot of truth to the comparison, however, and it isn't exactly an insult. The guitarist, who also plays other instruments such as calabash and bongos, shares with Hooker a predilection for low-pitched vocals and mid-tempo, foot-stomping rhythms, often playing with minimal accompaniment. Toure died on March 7, 2006 from the bone cancer which he had been battling for years; however, he was able to complete one last album before passing". by Richie Unterberger

Herb Alpert's Whipped Cream & Other Delights Re-Whipped

40th Anniversary Edition

"It'll never be known exactly what made Whipped Cream & Other Delights Herb Alpert's big commercial breakthrough -- the music or the LP jacket's luscious nude model covered almost entirely with simulated whipped cream. Probably both. In any case, Alpert's most famous album is built around a coherent concept; every song has a title with food in it. Within this concept, Alpert's musical tastes are still refreshingly eclectic; he uses Brazilian rhythms on "Green Peppers" and "Bittersweet Samba," reaches back to the big-band era for the haunting "Tangerine," uses Dixieland jazz on "Butterball," and goes to New Orleans for the Allen Toussain-penned title track (familiar to viewers of TV's The Dating Game). He also has developed a unique sense of timing as a producer, using pauses for humorous effect, managing to score his second Top Ten hit with a complex, tempo-shifting version of "A Taste of Honey." No wonder Alpert drew such a large, diverse audience at his peak; his choices of tunes spanned eras and generations, while his arrangements were energetic enough for the young and melodic enough for older listeners. Whipped Cream & Other Delights, number one in the U.S. for eight weeks, is available on CD, though the cover obviously doesn't make as alluring an impression as it did on LP". by Richard S. Ginell

"The New York Public Library has acquired the personal archive of William S. Dada on Display

Marcel Duchamp's urinal art, Fountain. Marcel Duchamp/Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York/ADAGP, Paris/Succession Marcel Duchamp © 2005

"In 1917, Duchamp created one of his "ready-made" works -- again in the spirit of challenging what society defined as art. A mass-produced object -- in this case a sparkling white porcelain urinal bought from a plumbing supplier -- was turned on its side, signed, and called "Fountain." When Duchamp tried to enter it in a New York exhibition, it was refused. Paris museum director Alfred Packmon observes that Duchamp and the Dadaists were making the point that art was no longer just a nice bunch of flowers on the wall: "The artist is the person who decides what is art and what is not art.”
Dada was a moral and ethical response to the slaughter of World War I. In grief, rage, and despair, Dada used art to comment on the world, making art an indictment of the hypocrisies that wiped out a generation." NPR

The Inspiration

February 8, 1926 - February 4, 1968

• Utahns should embrace Neal Cassady. He was, after all, born if not on a Utah road, then at least beside it in in 1926. The inspiration behind Beat literature and the concept of free, spontaneous prose, Cassady led a lifestyle of exploration and encouraged others to do the same. Many say such encouragement eventually led to a little something known as the Hippie movement. The NEAL CASSADY BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION today marks his 80th birthday (he died in Mexico in 1968). Festivities include the lecture “Neal Cassady and The Beat Generation” by author Michael Schumacher at 11 a.m. at Weber State University’s Stewart Library. Later in Salt Lake City, John Sillito gives a brief presentation at the site where Neal Cassady once lived (48 W. Broadway) at 6:30 p.m.. Finally, a reading and celebration of Cassady’s life and work takes place at 7 p.m. at Ken Sanders Rare Books (268 South 200 East), with brief remarks by Michael Schumacher. All events are free.
